The Moshood Abiola Polytechnic Alumni Association (MAPALUM) has joined millions of Nigerians in commemorating June 12, paying glowing tributes to the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, whom it described as a symbol of democracy and a foundational pillar of the institution’s legacy.
In a statement signed by the National Public Relations Officer, Ganiyu Olowu, and made available to PLATFORM TIMES on Thursday, the National President of the Association, Alhaji Ayinde Soaga, described Chief Abiola as a man whose vision and sacrifice not only advanced Nigeria’s democratic evolution but also laid the foundation for the educational growth of generations of students at the institution now named after him.
“Chief MKO Abiola remains an iconic figure in Nigeria’s democratic history and an enduring benefactor of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic. His unwavering commitment to education, youth empowerment and national development laid the foundation upon which MAPOLY continues to thrive,” Soaga said.
“As alumni, we recognise our responsibility to uphold the ideals he fought for—justice, knowledge, and civic engagement. We rededicate ourselves to fostering these values in our communities and beyond.”
MAPALUM noted that the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election—widely regarded as the most credible in Nigeria’s history—became a rallying point for pro-democracy activism that ultimately paved the way for Nigeria’s return to civilian rule in 1999.
Describing Abiola not just as a national icon but as a direct benefactor of the polytechnic, the association said his personal commitment to education and youth advancement was instrumental to the growth of the institution, which has produced thousands of professionals over the decades.
“Chief MKO Abiola is not only a symbol of democracy but also a father figure whose generosity and vision gave life to what is today known as Moshood Abiola Polytechnic,” the statement read.
“His legacy lives on through the institution that bears his name and the countless graduates who continue to carry forward his vision for national progress.”
The association also offered prayers for the peaceful repose of Abiola’s soul, while calling on Nigerians—especially its members—to remain steadfast in promoting civic responsibility, democratic ideals and educational excellence.
MAPALUM concluded by reaffirming its commitment to the values Abiola stood for, describing June 12 as an annual call to action for all Nigerians to protect the principles of justice, freedom, and accountable governance.
Chief MKO Abiola, the presumed winner of the annulled 1993 presidential election, died in detention on July 7, 1998, while fighting for the actualisation of his mandate. In 2018, he was posthumously awarded Nigeria’s highest honour, the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR).
