A Magistrates’ court sitting in Owerri,Imo State, on Thursday, remanded a former deputy governor of the state, Gerald Irona, in a prison custody.
Irona is the immediate past deputy governor of the state.
After hearing the prosecution counsel and defense counsel, the presiding magistrate, C. N Ezerioha, ordered that Irona be remanded in Owerri correctional centre.
Ezerioha stated further that the court does not have the jurisdiction to hear the matter.
Recall, the former deputy was arrested on Wednesday from his Owerri residence by the state police command.
According to an eyewitness account, who does not want to be identified, “they alleged that his offence was, because he made a statement that Imo state will be made ungovernable during that Supreme Court battle between Governor Hope Uzodimma and former Governor Emeka Ihedioha if Ihedioha was removed from the office.
“And that Irona had earlier been declared wanted by the police for unlawful possession of government properties among other offence.
Some other sources alleged that Irona was arrested based on court order obtained by the state government.”
