A hearing-impaired woman, Hauwa’u Bello, has dragged her husband, Usman Shuaibu, before a Shari’a Court in the Magajin Gari area of Kaduna State, seeking the dissolution of their nine-year marriage over alleged neglect and starvation.
Bello, who spoke through a sign language interpreter, Aisha Sulaiman, told the court on Wednesday that her husband gives her only N50 daily to feed herself and their child.
“We got married in 2016, and at the beginning, my parents provided food for us. But when the food ran out, things turned worse,” she said.
The complainant, who claimed her husband is a tailor, accused him of completely shirking his responsibilities. She recounted how she was left stranded during childbirth and how it took her mother-in-law’s intervention to pay the hospital bill.
“My husband doesn’t take care of me or the child. Our parents have tried to intervene and advised him to do the right thing, but he has refused to change,” she told the court.
Bello pleaded with the court to grant her a divorce, citing persistent hardship and neglect.
However, the respondent, Shuaibu, denied all the allegations, insisting that he had not abandoned his responsibilities.
The presiding judge, Malam Kabir Muhammad, after hearing both sides, ordered the couple to return to court on August 25 with their parents or guardians for further mediation.
The case highlights growing concerns over spousal neglect and the plight of women, particularly those with disabilities, in marital relationships.
