No fewer than 80 worshippers abducted during a Sunday church service in Kurmin Wali community, Kajuru Local Government Area of Kaduna State, have escaped from their captors and reunited with their families, PLATFORM TIMES reports.
The victims were among over 160 worshippers seized about two weeks ago when armed bandits stormed the church during worship, triggering widespread outrage and renewed calls for improved security in the area.
Confirming the development on Sunday, the Village Head of Kurmin Wali, Ishaku Dan’azumi, said initial reports had put the number of abducted worshippers at about 177, but verification later showed that 80 of them managed to flee their abductors and sought refuge in neighbouring communities.
Dan’azumi disclosed, however, that 86 worshippers remain in captivity, urging security agencies to intensify rescue operations to secure their safe return.
“Some people are trying to politicise our situation, even as families of the victims are going through deep trauma,” he said. “We appeal to the government and the military to act swiftly to ensure the freedom of those still in the bandits’ camp.”
He added that the escapees were currently receiving medical attention and psychological support from relatives and community members.
Meanwhile, the Kaduna State Police Command said it would issue an official statement on the incident. The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Mansir Hassan, said, “The police will release a detailed report on the Kurmin Wali abduction.”
