The African Democratic Congress in Kano State has ceded 60 per cent of its state executive structure to former governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso following the emergence of new party leaders at a congress held on Sunday.
The development came as the party concluded its state congress at the Cobra Stadium in Magajin Rumfa, where Abdullahi Maikano was elected chairman alongside 33 other executive members.
Details of the exercise showed that Bala Inuwa emerged as secretary, Abba Muktar as treasurer, while Salisu Muhammad was elected financial secretary. Other officials include Muhammad Yahaya as legal adviser, Farida Kamba as women leader and Sunusi Oscar as youth leader.
The congress was attended by members of the state transition committee as well as national officials of the party deployed from Abuja to supervise the process and screen aspirants.
Kwankwaso, who was present at the event alongside other party stakeholders, was said to have accepted 60 per cent of the party’s structure in the state, turning down an earlier offer of 80 per cent.
A media aide to the former governor, Saifullahi Hassan, said the decision was taken to allow for wider inclusion and participation among members within the opposition coalition.
The former governor recently defected to the ADC after resigning from the New Nigeria People’s Party, the platform on which he contested the 2023 presidential election.
The latest development is seen as a significant boost to Kwankwaso’s influence within the ADC in Kano, as political realignments intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
