The Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission has recovered several government-owned vehicles from former commissioners who allegedly failed to return the official SUVs after leaving office.
The Chairman of the commission, Sa’idu Yahaya, disclosed this during an enforcement operation in Kano on Thursday, stating that the action followed the refusal of the affected former officials to comply with earlier directives to surrender the vehicles.
Yahaya explained that the move became necessary after the Office of the Secretary to the Kano State Government directed the ex-commissioners to return all government property in their possession, a directive he said was ignored.
“Government assets are not personal property. Once an official leaves office, all government vehicles and assets in their custody must be returned immediately,” he said.
According to him, the commission allowed ample time for voluntary compliance but was compelled to enforce the directive in line with its statutory mandate to safeguard public assets.
The commission said the recovery exercise was largely peaceful, except for mild resistance encountered at the residence of the former Commissioner for Security, Ibrahim Umar (retd), where one of the vehicles was eventually retrieved.
Other former officials whose vehicles were recovered include Dr Yusuf Ibrahim Kofar Mata, former Commissioner for Science and Technology; Dr Adamu Aliyu Kibiya, former Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs; Nasiru Sani Garo, former Commissioner for Special Projects; and Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso, a former Commissioner for Youth and Sports and son of Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
Yahaya dismissed insinuations that the action was politically motivated, insisting that the commission’s intervention was strictly in line with its constitutional responsibility.
“This is not about witch-hunting anyone. It is about protecting the resources of the people of Kano State. We will not tolerate unlawful retention of government property,” he added.
He warned that the agency would continue to monitor the use of public assets and take similar measures against any former or serving public officer found to be in possession of government property without authorisation.
