The Chief Judge of Kano State, Justice Dije Audu Aboki, has ordered the release of six long-term inmates during her inspection visit to correctional facilities across the state.
The inmates, who had spent several years in custody without trial, regained their freedom after the CJ reviewed their cases.
According to a statement issued on Friday by the spokesperson of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Kano Command, CSC Musbahu Lawan K/Nasarawa, the prisoners were victims of stalled trials, missing case files, and lack of active prosecution.
Justice Aboki explained that the exercise was part of her commitment to decongest custodial centres and address systemic lapses within the justice system.
“Justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done, particularly for those who have remained in custody without fair trial,” she said.
She urged the freed inmates to embrace reform and contribute meaningfully to society, stressing that the opportunity before them should not be wasted.
“You now have a new beginning. Be ambassadors of peace and stay away from crime,” she charged.
The CJ also called for stronger collaboration among the Nigeria Police Force, the Office of the Attorney-General, and the NCoS to ensure speedy dispensation of justice.
Speaking during the visit, the Controller of Corrections, Kano Command, Ado Inuwa, warned the released inmates against returning to crime.
He praised the Controller General of Corrections, CGC Sylvester Indidi Nwakuche, for prioritising inmate rehabilitation through vocational and educational programmes.
He noted that the service remained committed to reforming offenders and preparing them for reintegration into society.
