The Kano State Commissioner for Transport, Ibrahim Ali Namadi Dala, has denied having any personal or professional relationship with Sulaiman Danwawu, a suspected drug trafficker currently facing prosecution at the Federal High Court in Kano.
Namadi came under public scrutiny after reports emerged that he stood as surety for Danwawu, who is being tried over alleged involvement in illicit drug trafficking.
The development sparked outrage from residents and civil society actors who questioned the commissioner’s judgment.
In a statement issued on Friday, Namadi clarified that his involvement was based solely on appeals from “respected and credible individuals” who vouched for Danwawu’s character. He said he had no prior knowledge of the severity of the charges until after the court proceedings began.
“I had no personal or official dealings with the suspect. My decision to stand surety was made in good faith, following appeals from individuals I trusted,” Namadi stated.
The embattled commissioner said he was “shocked” upon learning the details of the case against Danwawu, describing the revelations as deeply troubling. He emphasized that the court granted the bail in accordance with Nigerian law, which presumes a suspect innocent until proven guilty.
Justice M.S. Shuaibu of the Federal High Court had, on July 17, approved bail for Danwawu following submissions by his legal team.
As part of the bail conditions, a serving state commissioner was required to act as surety— a role Namadi said he reluctantly accepted without full awareness of the case.
“I deeply regret being entangled in this situation. I have since contacted my legal team to explore the option of formally withdrawing as surety,” he added.
Namadi reaffirmed his commitment to due process, transparency, and the fight against drug trafficking, distancing himself from any act that could undermine the integrity of the state government.
“My values do not align with shielding criminality or condoning drug-related activities. I remain committed to upholding the law and supporting efforts to secure our communities,” he said.
