A Kano State High Court has sentenced a 30-year-old man, Abdulaziz Adamu, to death by hanging for murdering his employer, Alhaji Ali Alhassan, after abducting him and collecting a N15 million ransom from his family.
Justice Amina Adamu Aliyu delivered the judgment on Thursday, convicting Adamu on a three-count charge of conspiracy, kidnapping, and culpable homicide.
His co-defendant, Abdullahi Alhassan of Danladi Nasidi Quarters, was however discharged and acquitted for lack of evidence linking him to the killing.
According to the prosecution, Adamu, a resident of Dawakin Kudu Local Government Area, abducted the victim on June 16, 2024, in collaboration with the second defendant.
Prosecution counsel, Lamido Abba-Sorondinki, told the court that the convict lured his boss and later masterminded his abduction.
“At about 11:30 a.m. on that day, the defendant conspired with the second accused person and abducted the victim. They demanded and received N15 million ransom from the family of the deceased,” Abba-Sorondinki said.
The court heard that after collecting the ransom, Adamu and his accomplice beat the victim with heavy sticks on his head and chest, resulting in his death. The body was later buried inside the victim’s residence in Dawakin Kudu.
The prosecution tendered two witnesses and the confessional statement of the convict to prove its case.
While both defendants denied any wrongdoing, the court ruled that the evidence before it established Adamu’s guilt beyond reasonable doubt.
Justice Aliyu consequently sentenced him to death by hanging.
The acquitted co-defendant walked out of the courtroom a free man after the judge held that the prosecution failed to prove the allegations against him.
