In a recent development, the Kano State Hisbah Board revealed that all its bank accounts have been frozen following a lawsuit filed by hotel owners within the state.
Sheikh Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa, the Commander General of Hisbah, confirmed this development to TRT Afrika Hausa on Wednesday.
Several months ago, Hisbah operatives stirred controversy when they conducted raids on hotels and entertainment venues in Kano.
These incidents have now led to legal repercussions for the religious police force.
Confirming the freezing of accounts, Daurawa stated, “Yes, it is true that all of our bank accounts have been frozen.
I have sent a representative to meet with the Attorney-General because we were not informed about the alleged offence and the basis for the account closures.”
The legal action against Hisbah stems from a court document received, accusing the board of misconduct at two hotels.
The charges amount to N700,000 and N100,000 for each establishment, with a combined demand of N800,000, resulting in the freezing of Hisbah’s accounts.
Daurawa expressed frustration, stating, “We should be told about the offence we have committed so that we can ask our lawyers to participate in the discussion. If we fail to defend ourselves, then we will be judged.”
Furthermore, he voiced concerns over the impact of the court ruling on Hisbah’s operations, emphasizing that the restriction on bank accounts has severely hindered their ability to function.
The Commander General urged transparency in the legal proceedings to ensure a fair defense for the religious police force.
