In a bid to address the recent uproar and speculations surrounding the Kano Governorship Election dispute, the Chief Registrar of the Court of Appeal, Umar Bangari, stepped forward on Tuesday to provide clarity on the situation.
Contrary to widespread interpretations, Bangari emphasized that a typographical error within the judgment did not compromise the integrity or alter the findings of the court.
The controversy erupted following the appellate court’s decision to uphold the Kano State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal’s ruling, which nullified the victory of Kabir Yusuf from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in the March 18 Governorship Election.
The judgment became even more significant as the Court of Appeal, within the past week, unseated governors from opposition parties in Zamfara and Plateau States.
Chief Registrar Bangari reassured the public that the detected typo error would be promptly rectified upon the formal submission of applications by concerned parties, citing the court’s authority under Order 23 Rule 4 of the Court of Appeal Handbook to correct clerical errors.
Despite the controversy, he asserted that the judgment’s validity remained intact.
In Zamfara, the appellate court nullified the election of Governor Dauda Lawal from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on the grounds of inconclusiveness, ordering a fresh election in three local government areas.
The political landscape in the state now witnesses a tense competition between PDP’s Lawal and APC’s Bello Matawalle.
Similarly, in Plateau State, the Court of Appeal ruled in favor of the All Progressives Congress (APC), unseating PDP’s Caleb Mutfwang. The court mandated INEC to issue a Certificate of Return to APC’s Nentawe Goshwe, citing the party’s violation of a court order regarding a valid congress in the state’s 17 local government areas.
As the legal proceedings unfold, political tensions rise, with these recent appellate court decisions reshaping the electoral landscape and raising questions about the dynamics of power in the affected states.
