The Kano State Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has taken sweeping disciplinary action against several judicial officers, including the compulsory retirement of a high court registrar and the demotion of others, for various forms of misconduct, forgery, and abuse of office.
In a statement issued by JSC spokesperson, Baba Jibo-Ibrahim, the commission announced the sanctions following its 82nd meeting, where it adopted recommendations from the Judiciary Public Complaints Committee (JPCC).
Principal Registrar at the Kano High Court, Ahmad Aliyu Danmaraya, was forced into compulsory retirement with immediate effect after he was found guilty of forging a court affidavit, illegally affixing the court’s stamp and seal, and issuing a fake receipt—acts the JPCC described as a grave breach of judicial ethics.
Danmaraya was found to have impersonated a commissioner for oaths to carry out the fraudulent acts.
Court registrar, Salisu Sule, was demoted by one grade level after the panel upheld four complaints accusing him of intimidation, verbal abuse, and misuse of office.
The JSC noted that Sule had previously been cautioned via a warning letter issued on December 19, 2024, but further infractions necessitated stricter punishment.
Chief Magistrates Mustapha Sa’ad-Datti and Rabi Abdulkadir were reinstated after review, though they were sternly warned to uphold professionalism and integrity in their judicial duties.
In a particularly troubling case, Alkali Mustapha Kiru of the Sharia Court was recalled for a one-year period after he was found to have issued a writ of possession in a land dispute—despite the plaintiff failing to present a witness—thereby denying the plaintiff fair hearing.
Worse still, Kiru was found to have unlawfully imprisoned the petitioner for three weeks in an off-the-record detention after the individual challenged the controversial ruling.
The commission also issued a formal warning to Alkali Nasiru Ahmad for negligence and procedural violations in criminal case handling, which it said could result in miscarriage of justice.
Senior Magistrate Sakina Aminu was similarly cautioned for appointing a police prosecutor to her courtroom against the explicit directive of the Chief Judge.
The JSC directed her to maintain professional rapport with state counsel and to comply with the ban on police prosecutors.
The commission reiterated its commitment to upholding judicial accountability, saying it would continue to adopt tough measures against misconduct to preserve public trust in the judiciary.
“The commission will not tolerate any act that undermines the integrity of the judiciary,” the statement added.
