The Kano State Judicial Service Commission (KSJSC) has dismissed and demoted several judicial officers and staff over various acts of misconduct, in a sweeping disciplinary action aimed at sanitising the state judiciary.
The decision, according to a statement issued on Thursday by the spokesperson of the Kano State Judiciary, Baba Jibo Ibrahim, followed the adoption of recommendations from the Judiciary Public Complaints Committee (JPCC) at the Commission’s 86th meeting held on October 30, 2025.
Among those sanctioned was Ibrahim Salim, Clerk of the Upper Shari’a Court, Rijiyar Lemo, who was dismissed for forgery, falsification of court records, and demanding bribes from litigants — offences the Commission described as gross misconduct.
The Commission also demoted Isa Yuguda Wudilawa, a Principal Registrar at the Magistrate Court, Zungeru Complex, for diverting official funds into his personal account.
He was downgraded from Grade Level 12 to Grade Level 10, in line with Section 04305 of the Kano State Civil Service Rules and Regulation 41(d) of the Judicial Service Regulations 1980.
Similarly, Alkali Shamsu Maul’ainaini of the Upper Shari’a Court, Durbunde, was demoted and redeployed to the registrar cadre after being found guilty of financial impropriety and removal of court records, in violation of Circular No. 2 of 2021 on territorial jurisdiction.
Also affected was Alkali Ibrahim Isah Usman, Presiding Judge of Bebeji Shari’a Court, who was issued a strong warning and had his promotion deferred for one year for executing a judgment before the expiration of the 30-day right of appeal period.
In what the Commission described as a “highly unethical and dishonest act,” Alkali Munzali Tanko (Rtd.), formerly of Upper Shari’a Court, Post Office, was found to have conducted judicial proceedings nine days after his retirement.
The Commission condemned the act as “shameful and damaging to the judiciary’s image” and ordered that his conduct be made public as a deterrent to others.
The Commission also cautioned His Worship Halima A. B. Wali, a magistrate, for failing to follow due process in a criminal case involving the Commissioner of Police vs. Ashiru Me’wushirya, warning her to ensure her judgments strictly comply with legal procedures.
Likewise, His Worship Abdul’aziz M. Habib was sanctioned for entertaining cases contrary to official circulars. Although he showed remorse, the Commission placed him on half salary for three months and issued a strong warning.
In a rare show of commendation, the Commission praised Alkali Ali Jibrin Danzaki, Presiding Judge of Upper Shari’a Court, Rijiyar Lemo, for demonstrating integrity and professionalism by exposing the fraudulent acts of his clerk, Ibrahim Salim. He was issued a Letter of Commendation for his “honesty, integrity, and courage.”
The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to upholding discipline, transparency, and ethical standards in the judiciary, warning that any officer found engaging in corrupt or unprofessional conduct would face strict disciplinary action.
“The Kano State Judicial Service Commission will not condone misconduct at any level,” the statement added. “Any officer found wanting shall be dealt with in accordance with the law.”
The latest disciplinary actions come amid growing public concern over judicial integrity and accountability within Nigeria’s court system.
