The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Kano State Command, has arrested two young men for allegedly attempting to smuggle illicit drugs, including Indian hemp, to inmates at the Nomansland Court Complex in Kano.
The suspects, identified as Usman Khalid, 25, and Bello Musa Ahmed, 24, were apprehended by operatives attached to the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Goron Dutse, while inmates were being moved within the court premises.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, CSC Musbahu Lawan Kofar Nassarawa, said the duo, both residents of the Tsamiya (Breget) area of Kano State, were caught attempting to throw Indian hemp and other prohibited substances to inmates.
According to the statement, the arrest followed heightened surveillance around the court complex aimed at curbing the inflow of contraband items to inmates during court appearances.
“The suspects were intercepted in the act of attempting to pass illicit drugs to inmates, an action that constitutes a serious security breach and a violation of extant laws,” the statement read.
The Command warned members of the public against intermingling with inmates, particularly during their movement to and from court sessions, stressing that such conduct undermines security and attracts stiff penalties.
It reaffirmed the NCoS’ commitment to the rehabilitation and reformation of inmates, noting that drug-related activities within custodial centres and court environments would not be tolerated.
Following the arrest, the Controller of Corrections in Kano State, Ado Inuwa, directed the Legal and Intelligence Units of the Command to hand over the suspects, alongside the recovered substances, to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for further investigation and prosecution.
The NCoS also urged residents to continue cooperating with security agencies to help maintain law and order across the state.
