The Kano State Government has authorized the expenditure of N1.4 billion to cover examination fees for qualified Indigent students.
The Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Muhammad Garba, disclosed this at a press briefing held at the Government House in Kano after the council meeting.
The state’s Executive Council has approved the release of funds totaling N1,403,936,600 to sponsor 60,871 qualified indigent students from secondary schools for various examinations, including NECO, NABTEB, NBAIS, and SSCE.
He said that the beneficiaries of this initiative include students who achieved six credits or more, including English and Mathematics, in regular secondary schools’ qualifying examinations, as well as students from Senior Islamic and Tahfeez Secondary Schools.
Garba revealed that the council ratified the executive approval to deposit the equivalent of $100,000 into a dedicated state account which will serves as a counterpart contribution for the implementation of the World Bank Supported Immunization Plus and Malaria Progress by Accelerating Coverage and Transforming Services Project.
He added that the project aims at enhancing the state’s poor health indices through impactful interventions and focuses on immunization, reproductive, maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health, as well as the improvement of primary healthcare services.
“Furthermore, the council granted approval for the establishment of a management board for the recently upgraded and equipped Muhammadu Abdullahi Wase Teaching Hospital.
“The hospital, which has commenced postgraduate (Residency) training in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Radiology, and Internal Medicine, will serve as a valuable source of critical healthcare professionals for the state and the country as a whole.”
The commissioner highlighted that the board’s establishment, as outlined in the draft hospital bill, will provide the hospital with a standard management structure to compete with other teaching hospitals nationwide.
“The appointed chairman of the board is Prof. Adamu Ibrahim Yakasai from Bayero University, Kano. Other members include representatives from Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, the state Ministry of Health, the Nigeria Medical Association, Joint Health Sector Unions, Vice Chancellor’s Office at Yusuf Maitama Sule University, Kano, Provost College of Medicine, Chief Medical Director of MAWTH, Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee/CMO of MAWTH, and the hospital director of administration serving as the secretary.
“In addition, the council approved the establishment of a private University of Medicine and Health Sciences in Bichi town, Bichi Local Government. A piece of land located in Kofar Wambai, Bichi town, has been allocated for the institution.
“The council also granted approval for the enactment of a law to address the issue of blasphemous sermons targeting Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and attacks on individuals.
“This law aims to regulate preaching methods, which include open preaching in public places, hate speech or character defamation through various media platforms such as radio, television, newspapers, and social media, as well as attacks on leaders of opposing sects and incitement of followers.
“To monitor, supervise, and regulate all religious sermons in the state, the council approved the establishment of a robust Council of Ulama through an enabling law from the state House of Assembly.”
