No fewer than 130 security operatives, including over 100 members of the Katsina Community Watch Corps and more than 30 police officers, have been killed in the ongoing battle against banditry in Katsina State.
The disclosure was made by the State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr. Nasir Muazu, during a press briefing on the state’s security situation.
Muazu said the figure reflects the enormous sacrifices made by security operatives and local guards in reclaiming parts of the state once under the grip of violent bandits.
“These are not just numbers; they are names and faces of brave men who gave their lives for the safety of others. Over 100 members of the Katsina Community Watch Corps have died in active service, and more than 30 police officers have paid the supreme price,” the Commissioner said.
He noted that military personnel have also suffered casualties, though he did not give specific figures.
According to him, coordinated security operations involving the Nigerian Army, Police, Air Force, DSS, and the Community Watch Corps have led to significant improvement in many troubled areas across the state.
Muazu said when Governor Dikko Umaru Radda took office in 2023, all 24 local government areas in the state were under attack by bandits. However, some of the most affected councils — including Danmusa, Batsari, Jibia, and Charanchi — have now recorded considerable stability.
He specifically pointed out that Danmusa, previously one of the most insecure LGAs in the state, is now stabilised due to sustained security intervention.
The commissioner expressed concern over the rise in false information on social media aimed at discrediting government efforts and inciting fear among residents.
He appealed to the public to resist the spread of unverified reports, urging instead for unity and vigilance to sustain the gains made in the fight against criminal elements.
“The war against insecurity cannot be won by the government alone. We need the people’s support. Let us not allow falsehood to overshadow the truth of the progress we are making,” he said.
Muazu also reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to supporting families of the fallen heroes and those rescued from the clutches of bandits.
“We remain committed to compensating their families and providing necessary assistance to affected communities,” he added.
