The Kebbi State Police Command has arrested two nurses following the tragic death of two young sisters at the General Hospital in Zuru, allegedly after they were administered a wrong injection.
PLATFORM TIMES gathered that the victims, aged six and three, died on March 18 under circumstances suspected to be linked to medical negligence during treatment at the facility.
Sources within the hospital disclosed that the incident has sparked outrage in the community, with residents demanding accountability and improved standards in public healthcare delivery.
Confirming the development, authorities said the nurses involved are currently in custody while investigations continue to unravel the exact cause of the deaths and determine culpability.
In a swift response, the Kebbi State Government constituted a nine-member investigative panel to probe the incident. The panel, chaired by the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Yakubu Ahmed, has commenced sittings in Zuru.
Ahmed, who spoke during a condolence visit to the bereaved family at the Emir’s Palace, described the incident as tragic and avoidable, assuring that the government would ensure justice is served.
He said, “This is a deeply painful loss, and government is committed to a thorough investigation to ascertain what truly happened and prevent a recurrence.”
As part of measures to cushion the impact of the tragedy, the state government donated N10 million to the family of the deceased.
Ahmed, however, noted that the gesture was only meant to support the grieving family and not a compensation for the lives lost.
“No amount of money can replace this irreparable loss, but we hope this gesture will show that the family is not alone and has not been neglected,” he added.
Meanwhile, the outcome of the panel’s findings is expected to guide further action, including possible prosecution and reforms in the state’s healthcare system.
