Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania Secure 2027 AFCON Hosting Rights As Nigeria Misses Out

In a surprising turn of events, Nigeria has lost its bid to host the 2027 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) alongside Benin Republic.

Instead, the honor goes to a trio of East African nations, as Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania have been declared the joint hosts for the 2027 AFCON, according to a report by AFP.

The disappointment for Nigeria comes after a high-profile bid effort led by the Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh.

He, along with representatives from the Nigeria Football Federation, traveled to Egypt in hopes of securing the hosting rights for AFCON 2027.

Nigeria’s lone previous hosting of the AFCON took place in 1980, when Christian Chukwu captained the national team to a memorable victory in front of passionate home fans, including former President Shehu Shagari.

However, this time, Nigeria’s joint hosting aspirations with Ghana have ended in bitter disappointment, as the prestigious tournament finds its home in East Africa, with Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania taking center stage.

The last joint hosting of the AFCON, with Ghana, culminated in heartbreak for Nigeria, as Cameroon’s Indomitable Lions clinched the coveted trophy at the National Stadium in Lagos.
