A kidnap syndicate ran out of luck on Monday in Nasarawa State after a ghastly accident exposed their operations, leading to the recovery of a cache of weapons and ₦6.9 million ransom.
The incident occurred in Angwan Mayo, Kokona Local Government Area, when the gang’s Opel Vectra, with registration number Plateau BLD 566 ST, lost control near a Vehicle Inspection Officer (VIO) checkpoint.
The Nasarawa State Police Command said two of the suspects fled immediately after the crash but were forced to abandon their loot.
Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ramhan Nansel, disclosed that a vigilant VIO officer had already intercepted part of the items from the vehicle before operatives arrived at the scene.
“The vehicle was later towed to the police station where a thorough search led to the recovery of one AK-47 rifle, one Type 06 rifle, one G3 rifle, three magazines, and 57 rounds of live ammunition. Also recovered was a total cash sum of ₦6,908,150,” Nansel said.
A joint police and military operation later trailed the fleeing suspects into the forest, arresting Mohammed Tahir of Barkin Ladi, Plateau State, who confessed to being part of a seven-man gang.
During interrogation, Tahir reportedly admitted that the group recently abducted a lawyer in Nyanya, Abuja, from whom ransom was collected. He added that they were heading to Jos to share the proceeds when the accident disrupted their escape.
The police said efforts are ongoing to apprehend the other fleeing gang members.
Meanwhile, the state Commissioner of Police commended residents for their vigilance and assured that the Command, in collaboration with sister security agencies, would sustain the clampdown on criminal gangs across Nasarawa and neighbouring states.
