Six Nigerian Law School students en route to the Yola campus have been abducted by suspected kidnappers who are now demanding a ransom of N20 million for each student, totaling N120 million.
The victims, identified as Rev. Ernest Okafor, Ogbuka Fabian, Nwamma Philip, Okechukwu Obadiegwu, Obalem Emmanuel, and Obiorah David, were reportedly travelling from Onitsha, Anambra State, to resume studies after their court externship when they were kidnapped on Saturday, July 26, along the Wukari–Benue axis.
Multiple sources confirmed that the students were intercepted along a notorious stretch of road between Taraba and Benue states, a region increasingly plagued by insecurity and frequent abductions.
A classmate of the abducted students, identified simply as Chisom, recounted how the news broke.
“I tried to call three of them, but their numbers were off. When one of them finally picked, he shouted that he had been kidnapped and urged a colleague to help raise N20 million,” she said.
Another student based in Bayelsa State reportedly received a call from the wife of one of the abductees, confirming the abduction had occurred and urging urgent help.
A student leader at the Yola campus, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that the incident had been reported to the police. “We’ve contacted the Adamawa State Police Command. We’re hoping for updates, but nothing concrete has come in yet.”
The students were reportedly heading back for academic resumption scheduled for Monday, July 28, following their compulsory externship programme.
The incident has heightened concerns over the safety of students and commuters on Nigeria’s highways, particularly around Benue and Taraba, where banditry and kidnapping have become endemic.
Neither the Nigerian Law School management nor the police have issued an official statement as of the time of filing this report. Efforts to reach school officials were unsuccessful.
Meanwhile, the families of the victims are reportedly in distress, grappling with the enormous ransom demands amid calls for urgent government intervention.
