Tragedy struck in Ifon, Ose Local Government Area of Ondo State, as the Ward 5 Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr. Nelson Adepoyigi, was gruesomely murdered by his abductors after a ransom was paid for his release.
Adepoyigi was kidnapped last Monday while attempting to park his vehicle at his residence. His abduction sent shockwaves across the community, prompting urgent calls for his release.
The kidnappers initially demanded a ransom of N100 million but later reduced it to N5 million after extensive negotiations.
However, in a disturbing turn of events, two volunteers from Ifon who went to deliver the negotiated ransom were also seized by the gunmen. The abductors then demanded an additional N30 million for the release of all three captives.
According to sources in the community, the two volunteers were later freed, but the APC chairman was not as fortunate. The kidnappers reportedly confessed that Adepoyigi had been marked for execution by those behind the abduction.
Confirming the incident, the Chairman of Ose Local Government Area, Kolapo Ojo, decried the worsening security situation in the region.
“This pattern of brazen abductions, even at the very gates of people’s homes, confirms that insecurity has taken a dangerous and intolerable dimension,” he said.
Ojo urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to security agencies. “We must stay united in confronting this menace that threatens our peace and safety,” he added.
The killing of Adepoyigi has sparked outrage and fear among locals, who now fear for their safety amid rising cases of kidnappings in the area.
