Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Mutfwang, has revealed that gunmen responsible for the recent deadly attack in Jos disguised themselves as operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency to gain access to the community before unleashing violence.
The attack, which occurred in the Angwan Rukuba area of Jos North Local Government Area, reportedly claimed no fewer than 28 lives, leaving several others injured and throwing residents into mourning.
Mutfwang disclosed this during an interview on Channels Television, explaining that the assailants exploited residents’ familiarity with NDLEA operations to execute the attack with minimal resistance.
According to him, the attackers arrived hooded and mimicked the operational style of NDLEA officials, causing residents to initially mistake them for legitimate security operatives.
He said, “Obviously, the attackers have studied the psychology of the people who are used to seeing operatives of the NDLEA who come to raid neighbouring communities in search of drug addicts.
“So, they came in that manner, hooded, and were shooting in the manner NDLEA officers used to shoot. People took it for granted that it was an NDLEA incursion and they didn’t resist initially.
“But by the time they realised what was happening, a lot of damage had been done, and the attackers had already escaped.”
The governor described the assault as a calculated and well-coordinated operation, noting that the perpetrators demonstrated a high level of sophistication in handling weapons.
He warned that the incident might be part of a broader attempt to destabilise the state and undermine the relative peace Plateau had experienced in recent months.
Despite the scale of the attack, Mutfwang confirmed that no arrests had been made, but assured residents that security agencies were working with actionable intelligence to track down the perpetrators.
“At the moment, no arrests have been made, but we have credible intelligence that security agencies are following up. We also have useful leads that we believe will lead us to those responsible,” he said.
The governor, however, declined to disclose further details about the suspects, citing ongoing investigations.
While acknowledging the anger and grief among residents, Mutfwang urged the public to remain calm and law-abiding, warning against reprisals that could further escalate tensions in the state.
The attack has heightened concerns over security in Plateau, with residents calling for urgent measures to prevent further incidents and bring perpetrators to justice.
