More than three months after the throne of the Odemo of Isara-Remo in Remo North Local Government Area of Ogun State became vacant, the town’s kingmakers on Monday unanimously picked a property magnate, Bashorun Peter Oluwole Ogunbayo, as the new monarch.
Ogunbayo, the Chief Executive Officer of Amba Properties Nigeria Limited, defeated six other contenders in a keenly contested selection exercise held at the Odemo Palace in Isara-Remo.
Out of the 12 kingmakers, nine reportedly voted in favour of Ogunbayo in a session that was heavily guarded by a combined team of soldiers, policemen, operatives of the Amotekun Corps and local vigilantes.
The new monarch-elect floored other prominent indigenes of Isara, including a former member of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Otunba Fatai Sowemimo; a former Commissioner for Health, Dr. Kehinde Osifade; Sule Shodipe, Kunle Shodipe, Otunba Dele Amoda, and Asiwaju Muyiwa Sonupe.
The stool became vacant on May 1, 2025, following the death of Oba Albert Adebose Mayungbe, who had reigned for several years before joining his ancestors.
Speaking shortly after his declaration, the Odemo-elect expressed gratitude to God and praised Governor Dapo Abiodun for ensuring what he described as a transparent and interference-free process.
He pledged to leverage his business network and years of experience in the property and industrial sector to drive socio-economic development in Isara-Remo.
“I will use my network, experience and the grace of God to push for the industrialisation of our community. When there are jobs, economic prosperity will follow and crime will reduce. We already have robust developmental plans that will transform Isara into a hub of growth,” Ogunbayo said.
He also extended a hand of fellowship to the other contestants, urging them to support his vision for the community.
The Governor’s Special Adviser on Political Matters, Hon. Adebiyi Adeleye, who witnessed the process, commended the peaceful conduct of the exercise and lauded the contestants for displaying maturity.
Adeleye described the monarch-elect as “an illustrious son of Isara with the capacity to lead the community into an era of accelerated development.”
He further praised Governor Abiodun for “consistently supporting free, fair and credible chieftaincy selection processes” across the state, noting that the latest development in Isara-Remo was proof of the administration’s respect for the people’s will.
