No fewer than 13 inmates have escaped while one officer lost his life during a jail break at Koton Karfe Medium Security Custodial centre in Kogi State .
Confirming the incident, spokesperson for the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS), Abubakar Umar, disclosed this during a press briefing in Abuja.
He revealed that two of the escapees have since been recaptured, while efforts intensify to locate and return the remaining ten fugitives to custody.
Umar said the NCoS has launched a comprehensive investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding the jailbreak, emphasizing their commitment to understanding how the inmates managed to escape without causing structural damage to the facility.
He said “we are collaborating closely with law enforcement and other security agencies to ensure swift recapture of the escaped inmates.”
In response to the incident, Kogi State Commissioner for Information, Kingsley Fanwo, reassured residents that there is no cause for alarm.
He urged citizens to continue with their daily routines, emphasizing that the security of lives and property remains paramount.
He added that Governor Usman Ododo has already initiated an inquiry into the incident, with a view to preventing future breaches of custodial security.
Fanwo also issued a stern warning to the public, urging them to promptly report any suspicious activities or individuals to aid in the swift recapture of the escaped inmates.
