The Kogi State Polytechnic community has again been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of a lecturer, Anslem Ojodomo, who reportedly collapsed during a lecture session.
Ojodomo was said to have slumped on Thursday while addressing students in class, triggering panic among those present.
A source within the institution said that the lecturer suddenly became unresponsive in the middle of his lecture.
“The incident occurred during a classroom session. He slumped while speaking to students, and the class was thrown into confusion,” the source said.
He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention but was later confirmed dead despite efforts by medical personnel to revive him.
Ojodomo’s death comes barely a month after another lecturer in the institution, Barnabas Akuba, died shortly after completing his doctoral programme, deepening concerns within the academic community.
Multiple sources disclosed that the latest incident marks the third death recorded in the polytechnic within six weeks, a development that has heightened apprehension among staff and students.
The string of deaths reportedly began after the assumption of office of the Rector, Salihu Sanusi, on February 11.
“It is worrisome that both Ojodomo and Akuba died shortly after defending their PhD theses,” a staff member said, expressing concern over the pattern of fatalities.
Another source noted that the late lecturer had attended a meeting just hours before the incident and appeared to be in good health.
“He was lively and active during the meeting. It is difficult to comprehend that he is now gone,” the source added.
As of the time of filing this report, the management of the polytechnic had yet to issue an official statement on the incident, further fuelling anxiety within the institution.
