An aide to former Kano State Governor and leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has dismissed reports suggesting that the former presidential candidate travelled abroad for medical treatment, insisting the trip was purely personal.
Speaking with journalists on Wednesday, the aide, Kurugu, said Kwankwaso was in high spirits and actively engaged in political activities in Kano barely hours before leaving the country.
“Yes, it is true that Engr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has travelled out of the country, but it is a personal trip and not medical tourism,” Kurugu said.
“We were together with him throughout yesterday and this morning when he received supporters from Dawakin Kudu Local Government who paid him a solidarity visit, and from where he proceeded to the Singer Market.”
He added that the former governor’s public outings drew massive crowds, a development he said had unsettled political opponents.
“They are jittery with the organic crowd from the two major engagements of Rabiu Kwankwaso today — the visit from Dawakin Kudu supporters and how he was received at the Singer Market,” he said.
According to Kurugu, the crowd that accompanied Kwankwaso from Dawakin Kudu alone was larger than those who welcomed Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, to the All Progressives Congress (APC) last week.
“It will surprise you to see that the crowd from Dawakin Kudu Local Government alone was more than the people that welcomed Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to the APC put together,” he added.
The development comes amid growing political tension in Kano following the defection of Governor Yusuf to the APC, a move that reportedly strained his relationship with Kwankwaso, widely regarded as his political godfather.
Political observers say the latest exchanges underscore an intensifying battle for political influence in the state ahead of future electoral contests, with both camps mobilising grassroots support to assert dominance.
