The Kwara State Government has launched an investigation into the alleged sale of poisonous meat at Mandate Market in Ilorin, the state capital, following reports of 33 cows dying from poisoning.
The government’s swift action came after the Kwara Monitoring Group raised concerns over the incident, urging immediate intervention to prevent the distribution of the toxic meat to unsuspecting consumers.
A joint statement from the Commissioners for Health and Agriculture, Dr. Amina El-Imam and Toyosi Thomas Adebayo respectively, confirmed that government officials and experts have already arrived at the Mandate Market to seize the suspected poisoned meat.
The team includes representatives from various ministries, including Health, Agriculture, and Environment, who are working to safeguard public health by conducting laboratory tests to confirm the allegations.
Speaking on behalf of the government, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Toyosi Thomas-Adebayo, reassured the public of their commitment to ensuring food safety and urged calm while investigations are underway.
The government also commended the cooperation of Mandate Market’s leadership throughout the process.
