The Kwara State University Teaching Hospital (KWASUTH) in Ilorin has announced plans to conduct a mass burial for unclaimed corpses left in its mortuary.
This decision, according to a statement by the hospital’s Head of Corporate Affairs Unit, Yakubu Kamaldeen Aliagan, was necessitated by severe congestion at the facility’s mortuary.
The statement, issued on Sunday, highlighted the hospital’s inability to accommodate additional bodies due to the overcrowding caused by abandoned corpses.
“The management, therefore, implores the general public to come and retrieve the bodies of their relatives and loved ones within the next two weeks from the time of this announcement, after which the management will consider decongestion through mass burial,” the statement read.
The hospital management expressed concerns over the prolonged storage of unclaimed corpses, urging families to take immediate action to claim the remains of their loved ones.
The development underscores the challenges faced by medical institutions in Nigeria in managing mortuary facilities, often due to a lack of timely response from the public.
