The Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammadu Dingyadi, has acknowledged the absence of precise data on Nigeria’s unemployment rates.
During a session with the Senate Committee on Employment, Labour, and Productivity, chaired by Senator Diket Plang, Dingyadi refrained from providing specific figures, citing the need for accuracy.
Dingyadi, who has been in office for three months, emphasized the ministry’s dedication to combating unemployment.
He stated, “We have been tirelessly addressing unemployment in the ministry because it is our key assignment. All the skill development programmes we are implementing are aimed at tackling unemployment.”
When questioned about the current unemployment statistics, the minister admitted, “I don’t want to provide figures I am not sure of.
However, I assure you that we have these statistics. Our parastatals and agencies are working tirelessly on this issue, and we will coordinate and present accurate data to this committee soon.”
Senator Diket Plang commended the ministry’s efforts and highlighted President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to improving the welfare of Nigerian workers.
He noted the implementation of the new national minimum wage, effective April 1, 2024, as evidence of the administration’s dedication to workers’ well-being.
The minister pledged transparency, promising to make the unemployment figures public once finalized.
He added, “I know members of this committee are serious and intelligent, and they will scrutinize the data when presented.”
