The Labour Party has accused its former national chairman, Julius Abure, of corruption and incompetence in the appeal court case involving its candidate, Hon. Amobi Godwin Ogah, and Hon. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha of APC for the Federal House of Representatives seat of Isikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency.
In an open letter addressed to the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Labour Party stated that Abure’s media aides deliberately orchestrated bland and false narratives about the proceedings inside the Court of Appeal in Igbosere, Lagos state on October 19, 2023.
The letter, signed by the National Publicity Secretary, Dr. Arabambi Abayomi, stated that Abure was criminally indicted for forgery, impersonation, and criminal conspiracies, and was restrained by the FCT high court on April 5, 2023, from parading himself as the National Chairman of the party.
It also mentioned that Abure did not provide INEC with the mandatory 21 days’ notice for the conduct of wards, local governments, and state congresses in respect of Isikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency, which led to the annulment of Ogah’s victory by the election tribunal on September 6, 2023.
The party further claimed that Abure filed an appeal for Ogah without the authority of the acting national executives of the party and accused INEC’s legal department of bias and unprofessional conduct.
“Our party, under the then Former National Chairman Julius Abure, did not present any documents showing the date of conducting the primary.
“Thus, no evidence of primaries was presented before the court, and the Tribunal finally disallowed the claims of the Labour party, stating that it was an internal affair of the party.”
The party expressed confidence in Ogah’s victory at the appeal court, stating that he is the authentic candidate of the Labour Party and the choice of the people of Isikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency.
However, the party urged INEC to disregard Abure’s allegations and to respect the rule of law and due process in the appeal court case.
