Former Vice-Presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Dr. Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, on Monday made a bold move to reconcile the party’s feuding factions, declaring his loyalty to the Julius Abure-led leadership while calling for unity and ideological discipline within the party.
Baba-Ahmed attended a crucial National Executive Council (NEC) meeting convened by Abure’s faction in Abuja amid the party’s worsening leadership crisis.
The LP is currently split between the Abure-led group and another faction led by former Finance Minister Nenadi Usman, who claims to be the interim national chairman.
Speaking at the meeting, Baba-Ahmed described the LP as a “historic and unprecedented political force,” stating that it is not a platform anyone should abandon lightly.
“The Labour Party is not a party to walk away from,” he said.
“The successes and the history that the party has recorded are unique. I am here not just as a member, but as a peacemaker committed to reconciling divergent views and fostering unity.”
Baba-Ahmed reaffirmed his commitment to the party’s ideals and dismissed speculations about his involvement in opposition coalitions aimed at undermining LP’s structure.
“I’m proud to say that I attended meetings aimed at forming a coalition, but I did so as a moral obligation to hear all sides. I remain firmly in the Labour Party. I will not sleepwalk into any political arrangement,” he stated.
He warned against repeating past political miscalculations, referencing the 2015 coalition that unseated a sitting government but led to what he described as a disappointing administration. According to him, “the government that replaces another must be better—not just different.”
Baba-Ahmed’s remarks come as political actors and factions within LP jostle for control in the build-up to the 2027 general elections, raising concerns over the party’s preparedness and stability.
Insiders at the meeting hinted that more reconciliation efforts would be made in the coming weeks to harmonise the two camps. However, the rival faction led by Usman is yet to respond officially to Baba-Ahmed’s allegiance or calls for unity.
