The Labour Party (LP) has strongly dismissed the Nigeria Labour Congress’ (NLC) call for the prosecution of its National Chairman, Julius Abure, labeling it as a politically motivated attack aimed at tarnishing the party’s leadership.
In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Dr. Abayomi Arabambi, the party accused the NLC President, Joe Ajaero, and the NLC Political Commission led by Prof. Theophilus Ndubuaku of orchestrating a smear campaign against Abure and the party’s National Secretary, Farouk Umar Ibrahim.
The LP described the press conference held by Ndubuaku and others as a deliberate attempt to mislead the public and discredit the party’s leadership.
It dismissed allegations of forgery and criminal conspiracy against Abure, citing a forensic report and an investigative police report that exonerated him.
The party also referenced a March 6, 2023, Court of Appeal ruling that set aside allegations of forgery, perjury, and criminal conspiracy against Abure and three others.
According to the LP, the decision of Justices Hamma Akawu Barka, Adebukola Banjoko, and Peter Chudi Obiorah confirmed that only the Supreme Court had jurisdiction to overturn the ruling, making any fresh calls for prosecution baseless.
“The Inspector General of Police cannot be held responsible for not prosecuting a case that has already been decided by the Court of Appeal,” the statement read.
The LP further accused the NLC leadership of attempting to hijack the party for “selfish political interests,” insisting that the Congress had no legal authority to establish a political commission.
It pointed to documents from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Ministry of Labour, which allegedly confirmed the NLC’s lack of jurisdiction over LP affairs.
Furthermore, the party alleged that Ndubuaku and his associates were engaging in fraudulent political activities, citing claims that they illegally sold nomination forms to governorship aspirants during the 2024 Ondo election.
“As the Anambra governorship election approaches, Nigerians should be wary of these individuals attempting to exploit unsuspecting aspirants once again,” the statement warned, calling on security agencies to investigate what it termed a “political scam.”
The LP maintained that it would not bow to pressure, blackmail, or false information aimed at destabilizing its leadership, stating that it remains committed to its core objectives.
“The Labour Party is not available for political insurrection. We urge Ndubuaku and his associates to find a decent job instead of peddling falsehoods for political gain,” the party stated.
The LP also urged the public to disregard the NLC’s allegations, describing them as “mischievous, baseless, and driven by desperation ahead of the 2027 general elections.”
