The Olubadan-in-Council has officially nominated Senator Rashidi Ladoja, a former governor of Oyo State and prominent Ibadan high chief, as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland.
The decision was reached on Monday during a meeting held at the Oke-Aremo Palace, where all 11 senior chiefs in the Olubadan succession line—including Ladoja himself—unanimously endorsed his nomination.
Speaking after the meeting, the Balogun of Ibadanland, Oba Tajudeen Ajibola, confirmed that the council’s resolution would be forwarded to Governor Seyi Makinde for formal approval and the presentation of the staff of office.
“We have completed our internal processes in accordance with Ibadan chieftaincy customs,” Ajibola said. “It is now left to the governor to confirm the appointment and set a date for the coronation.”
The nomination comes shortly after the end of the 21-day mourning period for the late Olubadan, Oba Lekan Balogun, who passed away on July 7, 2025, after reigning for one year.
Although Ladoja, 79, is next in line from the civil lineage and currently holds the title of Otun Olubadan, his ascent to the throne follows longstanding traditions that alternate between the civil and military lines.
Governor Makinde is expected to make a formal proclamation in the coming weeks, although officials have hinted that the official installation may be delayed until after the burial of the late Olubadan.
Ladoja’s emergence as the next monarch is seen as a pivotal moment in Ibadan’s traditional leadership, given his prominent political background as a senator, business mogul, and governor between 2003 and 2007.
His ascension is expected to bring political experience and national recognition to the revered throne of Ibadanland.
