Lafarge Africa Plc, a leader in innovative and sustainable cement production, has concluded a successful three-day capacity-building training program for Geoscientists and Mining Engineers at its Ewekoro Training Center in Ogun State.
The event, which was held in collaboration with the Ogun State Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Investment, aimed to equip participants with essential technical knowledge and hands-on experience to enhance their skills in the mining sector.
The training brought together 25 participants from diverse sectors, featuring expert-led sessions that focused on mining best practices, safety protocols, raw materials management, community engagement, and sustainability initiatives.
Attendees were also given the opportunity to tour Lafarge’s Ewekoro Quarry, where they gained valuable insights into mining operations and environmental conservation practices.
In his opening remarks, Engr. Philip Anaobi, Plant Manager at Lafarge Africa, emphasized the company’s unwavering commitment to operational excellence and capacity development within Nigeria’s mining sector.
He reaffirmed Lafarge’s vision of empowering industry professionals with the knowledge necessary to drive sustainable growth in the mining industry.
One of the key highlights of the training was a session by Prof. Jimoh Ajadi, a renowned expert from the Department of Geology at Kwara State University.
He provided participants with an in-depth understanding of global mining best practices, focusing on safety regulations, environmental sustainability, and technological innovations that are shaping the future of the industry.
Lafarge’s Head of Sustainability and Sponsorships, Gabriel Pollyn, also led a lecture on the company’s commitment to sustainability.
Pollyn highlighted Lafarge’s emphasis on climate and energy efficiency, the circular economy, and nature conservation.
He shared how the company is pioneering efforts in eco-friendly cement solutions, waste recycling, and reducing its carbon footprint to promote sustainable resource extraction.
The training also shed light on Lafarge’s community engagement model. Engr. Oluyomi Owolabi, the company’s Community Relations Manager, spoke about the company’s Community Relations Committee (CRC) and its role in fostering long-term partnerships with 14 host communities.
He emphasized Lafarge’s investment in education, healthcare, and infrastructure as key elements of the company’s strong and lasting relationships with local stakeholders.
Participants expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to take part in the training. Emmanuel Okechukwu, one of the delegates, described the program as a valuable learning experience.
He noted that the insights gained would go a long way in improving operations and promoting sustainability within their organizations and the wider mining industry.
