Minister of Defence, Mohammed Abubakar has described the late Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen Taoreed Lagbaja as a warrior who fought against terrorism in all theatres of war.

The presidency confirmed Lagbaja’s passing on Tuesday night in Lagos after a period of illness.

Born on February 28, 1968, Lt. General Lagbaja was appointed Chief of Army Staff on June 19, 2023, by President Tinubu.

Reacting to the death of Lagbaja, shortly after the cancellation of the weekly Federal Executive Council meeting, the Defence Minister said, “It’s really very sad. It’s really tragic. So we are using this opportunity to condole Mr. President over this heavy loss, indeed, his family and the entire Nigeria.

“It’s a great loss for our country. He was a gallant officer, very hard working and has been to all the theatres of war and did commendably well for this country. It’s a very, very, very sad loss.

“He was indeed a warrior. We pray to Allah to receive his soul”

Corroborating Abubakar, the Minister of State, Defence, Bello Matawalle said there he had a cordial working relationship with the late Chief of Army Staff.

His words, “We enjoyed working with him, because, as the Honorable Minister said, he was a gallant officer, and it’s a great loss to this nation. All we can say is to ask God to bless the family, and we urge Nigerians to continue praying for the spirit of Lagbaja.

“We send our condolences to the family of the deceased and Mr President, because it’s a great loss to this nation”.
