The Lagos State Government has arrested no fewer than 45 beggars during coordinated enforcement and mop-up operations across major parts of the metropolis, reiterating its zero-tolerance stance on street begging.
The arrests, carried out by environmental enforcement teams, took place in Alimosho, Agege and Oshodi as part of routine compliance activities aimed at restoring order and safety to public spaces.
The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed the development on Tuesday through his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, noting that the exercise was part of sustained efforts by the state to rid roads and public spaces of activities considered environmental nuisances.
“As part of our sustained enforcement and mop-up operations across the state, our teams recorded further arrests today,” Wahab stated.
He explained that 17 beggars were apprehended in Alimosho during the initial operation, while 12 others were arrested in Agege.
A follow-up operation in Alimosho led to the arrest of an additional 10 beggars, while six were picked up in Oshodi, bringing the total number to 45.
The commissioner said the enforcement drive was anchored on the state’s policy against street begging, which he described as a practice that endangers lives, disrupts public order and poses serious safety risks.
“Street begging constitutes an environmental nuisance and exposes both the individuals involved and road users to avoidable dangers, especially when it takes place along major roads, medians and other public spaces,” Wahab said.
He added that the state government would continue to intensify enforcement across Lagos, warning that defaulters would be arrested and made to face the full weight of the law, as the administration remains committed to maintaining a cleaner, safer and more orderly environment for residents.
