Lagos State Commissioner of Police Adegoke Fayoade has revealed that the investigation into the death of popular singer MohBad has been hindered by the delay in receiving the toxicology report.
The 27-year-old artist passed away on September 12, 2023, under controversial circumstances and was buried the following day.
The police, responding to public outcry, established a panel to probe MohBad’s death.
The nurse who administered a vaccine to him was subsequently arrested for operating without a license. The investigation included the exhumation of MohBad’s corpse for crucial tests.
During a press briefing at the Command Headquarters, Commissioner Fayoade explained that the delay in obtaining the toxicology report was attributed to the destruction of a state-of-the-art laboratory during the EndSARS protests.
The laboratory, initially built by the Lagos State government, was a critical facility for forensic examinations.
Commissioner Fayoade stated, “You will recall that some years back, the Lagos State government built a state-of-the-art laboratory. Unfortunately, that laboratory was destroyed by urchins during the EndSARS protest.
If not for the destruction, we wouldn’t have needed to send the deceased’s sample to the US for toxicology examination.”
He continued, “We are still awaiting the toxicology report from the US. Once received, we will make the outcome public.”
The destruction caused by the EndSARS protests in 2020 included multi-billion naira properties in Lagos, such as the DNA and Forensic Center commissioned by former President Muhammadu Buhari in Ikeja.
The center, an ISO 17025:2017 accredited forensic DNA center, aimed to enhance public safety and support criminal and civil investigations.
Before the attack, the center provided services like Forensic Serology, Relationship DNA Analysis, Forensic DNA Analysis, and Crime Scene Processing.
