The Lagos State Government has sealed 35 supermarkets across the state for selling expired products between January and April 2025.
Commissioner for Commerce, Cooperative, Trade and Investment, Mrs. Folashade Ambrose, made this known on Tuesday during a ministerial press briefing to commemorate the second anniversary of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second term in office.
Ambrose said the enforcement action was part of ongoing efforts to ensure consumer safety and protect public health in Lagos.
She explained that in addition to the closures, several other stores were sanctioned and fined for stocking expired goods in violation of consumer protection laws.
“The Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency has been proactive in monitoring outlets and educating consumers about their rights,” the commissioner stated, urging residents to report cases involving expired or substandard products.
The crackdown in Lagos aligns with a broader national effort to rid the market of unsafe goods. Earlier in January, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) shut a warehouse in Kaduna stocked with expired food and cosmetic items worth an estimated N75 million.
Also in February, NAFDAC uncovered an illegal drug repackaging operation in Umumeje village, Osisioma Ngwa, Abia State, where large quantities of expired medications were being revalidated and prepared for resale.
The Lagos State Government reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding public health and ensuring only safe, quality products are available to consumers.
“We will continue to intensify our surveillance and enforcement, and we urge businesses to comply with all regulatory requirements,” Ambrose added.
