…Victim Pleads For Attacker’s Release Despite Injuries
A 27-year-old Lagos-based hairdresser identified simply as Fatima is currently battling severe injuries after allegedly being brutally assaulted by her lover, resulting in the loss of six teeth.
PLATFORM TIMES gathered that the incident occurred on Saturday, July 12, at their residence on Ibadan Street in the Ebutte Meta area of Lagos.
According to family sources, Fatima was hospitalised after a violent altercation with her boyfriend turned bloody.
A relative who spoke under the condition of anonymity revealed that the family only became aware of the incident after a neighbour contacted them about her condition.
“At first, we thought it was a minor issue until someone we sent to check on her said she had been severely beaten by her lover. We became alarmed when we received a photo showing her missing teeth,” the family member said.
The relative confirmed that the incident was reported to the Denton Police Station and the suspect was initially arrested. However, he was allegedly released shortly after.
Residents explained that Fatima had suffered repeated abuse in the hands of her partner. A neighbour, Adetunji, revealed that the latest assault was the most severe.
“It’s not the first time he has beaten her. We’ve intervened a few times. But she always goes back to him.
“This time, he damaged her mouth so badly that her family got involved. Still, she pleaded with the police to release him,” Adetunji said.
Sources disclosed that Fatima is currently undergoing medical treatment and has been fitted with temporary dental braces. She is expected to undergo reconstructive surgery by mid-August.
Efforts to get a comment from the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, were unsuccessful as calls and messages to his phone were unanswered as of press time.
This incident adds to the growing list of gender-based violence cases in Lagos.
In February, the police arrested a 23-year-old man, Gbolahan Adebayo, for allegedly beating his girlfriend to death in Ijedodo, Alimosho Local Government Area.
