Lagos State authorities have intensified efforts to curb street begging and public nuisance, arresting 115 street beggars and securing the conviction of 26 members of the notorious “Omotaku” gang.
The arrests and convictions, which took place on Monday, January 26, are part of ongoing enforcement operations across the state, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed in a statement on his X (formerly Twitter) handle.
According to Wahab, the street beggars were apprehended at different locations during coordinated operations involving multiple government agencies.
He further revealed that 26 suspected members of the “Omotaku” group, a gang of street urchins known for obstructing highways and causing public disorder, were arraigned before a Magistrate Court in Oshodi within 24 hours of their arrest.
“The 26 suspects pleaded guilty to the charges against them and were sentenced to three months’ imprisonment in accordance with the law,” Wahab stated.
The commissioner said the operation underscores the Lagos State Government’s zero-tolerance stance on activities that threaten public safety, disrupt order, and undermine the proper use of public spaces.
“Enforcement efforts will continue across the State to ensure compliance with existing laws and to maintain a safe and orderly environment for all Lagosians,” Wahab added.
The government has repeatedly warned residents and visitors that violations of public order laws would be met with strict enforcement measures. Officials say the ongoing operations are aimed at creating a safer, more habitable city for everyone.
