Lagos loses N4trn to gridlock annually – Govt

The Lagos State Government yesterday lamented that the state lost an estimated N4 trillion annually due to traffic congestion.

The special adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on transportation, Mr Sola Giwa, disclosed this during an interview on TVC News, where he highlighted government’s plan to tackle gridlock by enforcing an electronic call-up (e-call-up) system for tankers and articulated vehicles operating along the Lekki-Epe corridor.

Giwa explained that under the new policy, which takes effect from Monday, June 16, 2025, all tanker and truck drivers entering Lagos to load or offload goods must register and schedule their movement via the digital e-call-up platform. The system, he said, was designed to coordinate truck movements, eliminate indiscriminate roadside parking and reduce disruption to other road users.

“The enforcement of the electronic call-up (e-call-up) system is a strategic effort by the state government to enhance logistics coordination, ease traffic congestion and improve road safety,” he said.

He said Lagosians lost an average of four hours daily in traffic, resulting in significant economic losses.

“We estimate that the state loses N4 trillion annually due to gridlock caused by unregulated parking and disorderly loading and offloading activities along major logistics corridors,” Giwa said.

He further said tanker operators would be required to upload their Authority to Load (ATL) documents and pre-book designated parking slots before arriving in Lagos. He said the e-call-up system would also collect key travel and cargo information to enable efficient space allocation.

He added that the state government had approved seven dedicated truck parks along the Lekki-Epe axis to support the implementation of the policy.

Giwa said these parks would be equipped with essential amenities, including restrooms, kitchens and electricity to ensure the safety and comfort of drivers.
