The Grand Chief Imam of Lagos, Shaykh (Engr.) Sulaimon Oluwatoyin Abou Nolla, has said Muslims in Lagos State will commence and end this year’s Ramadan fasting strictly in line with the official declaration of the Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar.
In a video message monitored in Lagos on Tuesday, the Chief Imam urged Muslims to remain patient and await the Sultan’s announcement on the sighting of the new moon, describing the directive as binding and essential for unity among the faithful.
“As we did it in previous years, so we shall do it this year. We should patiently wait for the announcement of the Ramadan moon sighting from the leader of Muslims in this country, His Eminence, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar,” Abou Nolla said.
He stressed that obedience to constituted religious authority was in line with Islamic teachings and a major factor in sustaining cohesion within the Muslim community.
“This is the programme of Allah, and it is what we, the Muslims in Lagos State, will follow so as to achieve stronger unity. Allah says: Atiullah wa atiur-rasul wa ulil-amri minkum — obey Allah, obey His Messenger and those in authority among you,” he added.
The Chief Imam also invited Muslims, particularly those within Lagos Island and its environs, to participate in Tarawih prayers at the Lagos Central Mosque once Ramadan begins, while urging the faithful to use the holy month to pray for Lagos State and the nation.
He further prayed for peace, harmony and spiritual renewal among Muslims in Lagos and across the South-West.
Ramadan fasting remains one of the strongest symbols of unity among Muslims nationwide, with the Sultan of Sokoto traditionally coordinating moon-sighting and announcements to ensure uniform observance across the country. Since his ascension to the throne in 2006, the Sultan has played a leading role in promoting peace, unity and religious harmony among Nigerian Muslims.
