Lagos Resident Alleges Police Extortion Using POS Operator Near  Beach

A Lagos resident  has  shared a harrowing experience on X platform, revealing how he and his friends were allegedly assaulted and extorted by police officers from Ogombo Police Station in the state . 

PLATFORM TIMES gathered that the  incident occurred on Sunday as they were en route to Barracuda Beach in an Uber taxi.

According to the victim’s account, the officers stopped the Uber, conducted a search, and, finding nothing incriminating, inquired about their occupations. 

He said that despite providing the information, the officers allegedly demanded identity cards. 

The victim, explaining that he was an apprentice without his ID, and the two female friends being students, claimed the officers insisted on taking him to the station.

He said, at the station, the victim stated that the officers refused to take him inside but demanded a hefty sum of N200,000. Eventually, they settled on extorting N10,000 via a POS operator. 

According to him, the victim reached out to the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, on X, sharing details of the alleged extortion and providing a transaction history.

In his complaint, the victim described how the police threatened him not to make calls during the ordeal.

 He emphasized the lack of offenses committed and questioned the demand for bail money without a clear reason. 

The officers allegedly took him to a POS cashier near the station, where he transferred N10,000.

Upon the victim’s complaint, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, directed attention to the Lagos Police Command Complaints Response Unit on X. 

However, attempts to obtain an official statement from the police were unsuccessful, as calls to the police spokesperson went unanswered, and no response was received to a message sent.
