The Christ Mitots School in Ikorodu, Lagos, has taken swift action by suspending a 45-year-old teacher, Stella Nwadigo, after a video showing her slapping a three-year-old pupil went viral on Wednesday.
The disturbing footage, which sparked public outrage, showed the teacher physically disciplining the child for his inability to write numbers quickly.
In a statement released on Thursday, the school expressed deep regret over the incident, condemning the teacher’s actions as completely unacceptable.
“We are horrified by this incident and wish to make it clear that such actions will not be tolerated,” the statement read.
The school, committed to a culture of respect and care, also confirmed that Nwadigo had been suspended indefinitely, pending a thorough investigation.
“As an institution, we place the utmost importance on safeguarding every child under our care,” the statement further emphasized.
Public reaction to the video has been swift, with many calling for stronger actions to prevent child abuse in educational institutions.
The school’s management has promised to address the issue comprehensively, including organizing mandatory training for teachers to reinforce child protection protocols and encourage positive disciplinary methods.
Additionally, the school has implemented a whistle-blowing system, allowing students, parents, and guardians to report any inappropriate behavior, ensuring such incidents are dealt with promptly.
The school also reached out to the affected child’s family to offer an apology, expressing deep regret over the incident.
“We have apologized to the child and his family and are working to ensure this matter is resolved responsibly,” the statement concluded.
