The Lagos State Government has closed down a branch of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), a Celestial Church of God, several nightclubs, and event centres across the state, citing violations related to noise pollution.
Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced the enforcement on Wednesday, stating that the closures were carried out by the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) on Tuesday.
The shutdowns targeted establishments in multiple areas, including Ogudu, Gbagada, Iyana Ejigbo, Isolo, Ajao Estate, Oshodi, Ilasamaja, and Okota.
Among the sealed establishments were prominent religious centres and social venues, such as RCCG, Celestial Church of God, OMA Nightclub and Lounge, Honourable Lounge & Lodging, Bridge Spot Bar, Okiki Event Center and Hall, Emota Paradise Hotel (Phase 2), CF Hotel & Suites, House 27 Hotel & Suites, Echo Spring Hotel, and Smile T Continental Hotel.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Wahab emphasized that the enforcement action was part of LASEPA’s ongoing efforts to ensure environmental compliance and protect public health.
“This enforcement drive, focusing on areas like Ogudu, Gbagada, Iyana Ejigbo, Isolo, Ajao Estate, Oshodi, Ilasamaja, and Okota, is part of LASEPA’s continuous efforts to uphold environmental standards and safeguard public health,” Wahab wrote.
He further noted that the government is committed to curbing noise pollution and ensuring that establishments operate within the state’s environmental regulations.
This action, according to Wahab, serves as a reminder to other businesses to adhere strictly to environmental standards or risk similar penalties.
