A street sweeper working under the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has decried poor working conditions, unpaid wages, and excessive salary deductions, calling on the agency’s leadership to address their grievances.
In a video circulating online, the worker, addressing LAWMA’s CEO, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, and other officials, lamented what she described as unfair treatment despite their critical role in keeping Lagos clean.
She revealed that workers were promised a salary increase to N85,000 in August 2024, but they still receive only N30,000 to N40,000, with unexplained deductions.
She also alleged that the N25,000 presidential wage allowance approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been reduced to N10,000, and even that is paid inconsistently.
Adding to their frustration, the worker claimed that sweepers must buy their own work tools, including brooms costing N1,000 each, without receiving any allowances.
The worker described extreme working conditions, including exposure to harmful dust and traffic hazards, without health benefits or risk allowances.
She alleged that at least three sweepers lost their lives on duty last year due to job-related hazards, with little or no compensation for their families.
She criticized the contract system under which they are employed, arguing that if deductions are necessary, they should not exceed N10,000, rather than the N45,000 currently withheld from their salaries.
The sweeper called out several LAWMA executives, accusing them of enjoying food, transport, and medical benefits, while the workers who risk their lives daily are neglected.
“If LAWMA workers refuse to work for just three days, Lagos will be in chaos,” she warned, demanding immediate payment of their full wages and better working conditions.
