The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Unit Taskforce has made a significant breakthrough in its efforts to curb criminal activities within the metropolis, with the apprehension of 22 suspects who were using Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) terminals as hideouts.
Chairman of the agency, CSP Adetayo Akerele, revealed this in a statement released on Sunday, underscoring the agency’s commitment to public safety and law enforcement in Lagos State.
The operation, prompted by numerous complaints from residents of Obalende, targeted the illegal activities of hoodlums who had been terrorizing innocent citizens in the area.
According to Akerele, the raid was conducted following reports that criminal elements had converted the BRT terminal at Tafawa Balewa Square into a base for their nefarious activities, including assaults on commuters and residents alike.
The swift action taken by task force operatives on Saturday night led to the arrest of the suspects, who were found in possession of dangerous weapons and illicit substances.
“We will not tolerate criminal behavior that threatens the peace and security of law-abiding Lagosians,” Akerele declared, emphasizing the state government’s unwavering resolve to maintain order across public spaces.
Assuring continuous surveillance and patrols in collaboration with the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), Akerele reiterated plans to safeguard other vulnerable BRT terminals from similar incidents in the future.
He urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, reinforcing the collective effort required to sustain the city’s tranquility.
The apprehended suspects are currently in custody, awaiting due legal processes as the task force remains steadfast in its mandate to eliminate crime and uphold public safety throughout Lagos State.
