In a decisive move against unauthorized motorcycle operations, the Lagos State Taskforce has seized 344 commercial motorcycles, commonly known as okada, during an intensive week-long raid across various parts of the state.
The agency, led by Chairman CSP Shola Jejeloye, expressed a firm commitment to bring the activities of defiant okada operators to a complete halt. Gbadeyan Abdulraheem, the agency’s Director of Press & Public Affairs, issued a statement on Sunday outlining the objectives of the operation.
During the raid, 174 bikes were impounded in the Abule Ado area, 50 in Lagos Island, 50 in Berger/Grammar School, and 70 in the Abule Egba area. Jejeloye emphasized the risk posed by okada operations along certain highways, endangering the lives of commuters.
Jejeloye declared, “We have taken it upon ourselves to end okada operations in the state and are implementing all necessary measures to achieve this goal.
“In year 2024, our aim is to ensure that all enforcement leads to court, discouraging any attempts to bypass regulations through connections or godfatherism.”
The Chairman issued a stern warning to security officials, stressing that anyone caught using a bike for commercial purposes while in uniform would face severe consequences.
He urged uniformed personnel to adhere to the state’s regulations on okada operations.
Emphasizing a zero-tolerance approach, Jejeloye urged Lagosians to refrain from patronizing okada operators, contributing to safer and more navigable roads.
The Lagos State Government had previously prohibited commercial motorcycle operations on major highways.
