In a bid to bolster road safety and regulatory compliance, the Lagos State Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS) executed a robust enforcement operation on Wednesday, resulting in the impoundment of over 50 rickety commercial vehicles failing to meet the prescribed minimum roadworthiness standards.
The enforcement operation, conducted across various key locations including Costain, Ikorodu road, Ojuelegba, Yaba, Oyingbo, Ikeja, and Ojodu Berger, saw Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIOs) meticulously scrutinizing commercial vehicles for compliance with safety regulations.
Numerous commercial vehicles were found wanting in essential components such as brakes, wipers, lights, shocks, and tires, as stipulated in the State’s Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018.
Director of Vehicle Inspection Services, Engr. Akin-George Fashola, emphasized that roadworthiness compliance applies to all vehicles plying Lagos roads, dispelling misconceptions about enforcement focus solely targeting private vehicles.
He stressed the importance of adhering to safety standards, highlighting that non-compliance often leads to road accidents.
Despite the professionalism exhibited by VIS officers, some defiant commercial vehicle drivers resisted apprehension and even damaged VIS patrol vans in their defiance.
Fashola reaffirmed that such acts would not deter the government from persisting in enforcement efforts until the prevalence of rickety vehicles is significantly curtailed.
Fashola urged all vehicle owners to voluntarily comply with roadworthiness requirements for the safety of lives and property.
He reiterated VIS’s commitment to conducting fair and unbiased enforcement drives, urging vehicle owners and operators to prioritize regular maintenance and adherence to roadworthiness standards to ensure the safety of all road users.
