The Renaissance Patriots Foundation has strongly condemned recent comments made by the Minister of Youths suggesting that Seyi Tinubu, son of Nigeria’s President, is fit to govern Lagos State.
In a press statement issued on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, the group categorically rejected any moves to impose Tinubu as a gubernatorial candidate, emphasizing that Lagos is not a monarchy and should not be subjected to “imperial rule.”
According to the foundation, Seyi Tinubu is not an indigene of Lagos State, as he cannot trace his roots to any of the state’s five divisions—Epe, Badagry, Lagos Island, Ikeja, or Ikorodu.
The group challenged Tinubu’s eligibility, stating that he could seek political opportunities in Osun or Oyo States, where his maternal heritage lies.
The statement lambasted the Minister of Youths, describing his endorsement of Tinubu as a personal opinion that does not reflect the views of Lagos residents.
“We regard it as his own and not a representation of the people of Lagos State across the five divisions,” the group noted.
The Patriots accused some elders of the state of being complicit in selling out Lagos to the “government of the day,” warning them against further attempts to impose external candidates.
“We say no to their further attempts to sell Lagos State to Mr. Seyi Tinubu,” the statement declared.
In a stern message to Seyi Tinubu, the group advised him to resist the influence of those pushing him to contest, warning of fierce opposition from the youth.
“This time around, as vibrant youths of the state, we will resist any attempt to force Mr. Seyi Tinubu on us as governor of our dear state,” the statement read.
The group further asserted that Lagosians have capable sons and daughters to lead the state, rejecting what they termed “imperial ambitions.”
They emphasized that Nigeria, including Lagos, is not a monarchy and called for transparent and merit-based governance.
Reiterating their stand, the Renaissance Patriots Foundation stated, “Lagos State throne is not for the picking anymore. If Seyi qualifies to run for the gubernatorial race, so be it, but he should try from Osun State or Oyo State where his mum hailed from.”
The foundation concluded by reaffirming the capacity of Lagos youths to govern themselves, rejecting any external interference in the state’s political landscape.
